This is damask, an Arabic fabric with the pattern formed by weaving one warp and one weft yarn multiple times. Predominantly damask is made from silk, wool, line or cotton and recently synthetic fibres. Damask is often used for tablecloths and furnishings. You can see the pattern upper left in the photo. This image is an experiment using dropped Japanese ink on a recycled tablecloth then spraying it with water. The natural fibres seem to facilitate a slow absorption of the ink giving a smokey or foggy effect. I've tried to stencil women running in the midst, fading the images in and out and added some machine stitching which doesn't seem to work into the image. Anyway the effort is still one of learning. Thanks for reading. By the way you never used to see women running about 50 years ago!
