I have stencilled an old ship onto the front and back and sprayed the stencil with water while it was wet. Then I've written the first line of a famous poem called "Sea Fever" by John Masefield. "I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by" The bag measures 24cm or 9.5 inches square, a nice size for underwear, cosmetics, hankies, shaving gear etc. Could be a unique gift also. It's on Etsy at creatifbitsnpieces. The drawstring top is pulled by a boot lace.
This small bag has been deliberately aged (it's been at sea for years) using recycled damask, soaking it in a tea bath which has given it a surprising sheen.

This is damask, an Arabic fabric with the pattern formed by weaving one warp and one weft yarn multiple times. Predominantly damask is made from silk, wool, line or cotton and recently synthetic fibres. Damask is often used for tablecloths and furnishings. You can see the pattern upper left in the photo. This image is an experiment using dropped Japanese ink on a recycled tablecloth then spraying it with water. The natural fibres seem to facilitate a slow absorption of the ink giving a smokey or foggy effect. I've tried to stencil women running in the midst, fading the images in and out and added some machine stitching which doesn't seem to work into the image. Anyway the effort is still one of learning. Thanks for reading. By the way you never used to see women running about 50 years ago! |
